Herding Dog Demonstration by Desiree Moffett
Hi, I'm Desiree Moffett and I got started with Border Collies back in January 2011 when I bought my first Border Collie, Wild Pecosbill to help with my parent's sheep and goats. Liking the way Pecos worked I then got Bunny and it went from there.
My dogs were used to take the sheep out to pasture during the day, sit out with them, and bring them back in at night starting in the spring going into fall. I have since moved and I still use my dogs to take my small flock out to pasture and bring them in at night.
I use them to sort ewes from lambs and to separate ewes into different breeding groups when breeding season comes along for friend's flocks and my flock. They then sort the rams into their appropriate breeding groups. After breeding season, they must sort the rams from the ewes and the ewes are then put together into one group. When temperatures dropped down to the single digits and below zero, I would get up in the middle of the night and use my dogs to get the goats and sheep moving so they didn't get too cold.
I compete in ASCA, NCA, MSSA, AHBA, and AKC.
